This Newsletter is Garden-focused, short & sweet, and full of useful information. As always, I welcome questions & am just a reply away.

You'll be hearing from me 1 or 2 times a month, and I look forward to sharing what I'm working on in my garden & helpful tips for you.

Let's Chat Weeds~

Nearly everyone I talk with would love a cottage garden in their yard (no matter how big or small!). But the number one worry I hear from folks is that they don't know how they'll find the time to keep up with their garden… and by keep up, I mean keep the weeds away & the space looking nice. Are you worried about keeping up with your garden? You're not alone.

This is fair concern. The sun, heat, water, soil, that help your plants grow ALSO helps weeds grow. If you have a thriving, healthy garden, you will have weeds. It just happens. But here are my tried and true ways I keep up with weeding in my gardens:

  1. Use mulch to keep weeds down. Mulch is my absolute favorite natural garden support. I use untreated wood chips straight from an arborist. Mulch aids in water retention and ultimately helps your soil. If you're dealing with a LOT of weeds, I recommend sheet mulching, which means cutting down your weeds, putting cardboard over them, then putting 2-5 inches of mulch over the top.
  2.  Weed in increments. Life is full for me with my two little children, our farm, and my Perennial Cottage Gardening business. I have found the best way for me to keep up with weeding is to take 5-20 minutes here and there. Part by part. Little by little. It's surprisingly effective!
  3. Weed BEFORE it looks like you have any weeds! I like to say that the best time to weed is when you take a cursory glance at your garden and it looks like there aren't any weeds. They're there, the weeds are simply small. So this make it the best time to go through
  4. Use a gardening tool to get the roots out. I like my Hori Hori from Barebones (non sponsored, I simply love my tool I've had for 4 years AND I love the company… as a side note, I will ALWAYS disclose sponsored content and I am passionate about only working with companies with transparent supply chains.)
Bottom line? You CAN keep up with your garden AND it's not too late to keep up with your weeds if they've gone a bit wild already this year. Your garden is never a lost cause!

Thanks for being here. Each month, I'll be sharing more information like the above. My goal is to be a gardening resource for you. I'm happy to hear from you & answer any gardening questions you might have <3

Cleaning up the garden- October edition
I have been so eager for October this garden season. The shorter days, the cooler, rainier weather. While the mums and asters flourish, everything else starts to wind down.  Part of me, appalled, asks, “What?! What do you mean you’re excited for the beauty of the summer garden to fade?! What do you mean you are ‘done with the sun’ and crave the weeks of drizzle?“ And with apologies to “Summer P...
Seed Saving
There is something incredible about saving seeds from my own garden & planting them for next year’s garden. This time of year is perfect for gathering seeds from your garden or adding seeds to a list to buy so you can seed save next year. ^some seeds I've saved from my garden this year. The two most important things (in my experience) are 1. waiting until the seeds have matured enough on the p...
The Autumn Garden & Cottage Garden Design Workshop
I try to spend the very start of my mornings in my garden, sometimes with a kiddo or two in tow.. Before I touch my phone, I make myself a cup of tea and head out to get morning sunlight in my eyes. Or, more apt today, misty rain in my hair. Today feels firmly planted in Autumn. As I walked around, I pulled a couple weeds & admired the asters and roses, and inevitably, as happens this time of y...
