Values Statement

Sep 21, 2025
Connect

I deeply value transparency in business, so I wanted to take a moment to share my business values.

  • Ethos
    • “Rooted in the seasons, rooted in healthy soil, rooted in joy.”

    • Seasonal & Slow living
    • Supporting the bees, other pollinators, and wildlife
    • Embracing Imperfection
    • Cultivating Beauty
    • Caring for & working with the garden & earth as it in turn cares for us
  • Core Values
    • My values of Environmental Sustainability, Ethical Consumption, Human Rights, and Community Support underscore everything I do in life & in my Rooted Cottage Gardening business.

    • I’m not (and never will be) claiming perfection. I am, however, communicating my commitment to continuous learning, growing, and implementing best practices & new knowledge.

  • How RCG gives back
    • Officially, RCG donates 10% of profits split between The Xerces Society (focuses on Pollinator Conservation & Reducing Pesticides) and Earthjustice (Environmental Law Org).
    • Unofficially, we are stewards of the land and incorporate sustainable practices into managing our farm.
    • We also do our best to support other businesses & organizations that are local, sustainability-focused, zero waste, organic, and/or fair trade.
    • I look forward to expanding impact as Rooted Cottage Gardening continues to grow
  • Partnerships
    • If you take a look around, you’ll notice very few partnerships with other businesses and very few product recommendations. This is because I have an intense vetting process for who I work with and what products I recommend.
    • I look for companies with similar values and products I actually use and own.
    • If I promote a product, you can know it’s been vetted, used, and then ultimately recommended by me.
    • If you’re interested in working with me, send me a message and I’d love to chat.
  • When you purchase from Rooted Cottage Gardening, what your money goes towards:
    • Our family! My spouse and I have two wonderful kiddos and this business helps support us.
    • Our ~20 acre farm*. Back in 2020, we brought a run down, neglected farm. We’re slowly but surely bringing it back to life.
      • *We acknowledge that we live on the traditional land of the Suquamish and Skokomish People
    • Our community. Our farm serves as a community gathering & growing place and we have big dreams to expand this over time.
  • Values Consistency
    • It’s been a bit of a wild ride in the business community with the rise of AI. My commitment to Environmental Sustainability and Ethical Consumption requires me to apply those values to the tech aspects of my business (and life, too).
    • Due to the environmental impact of AI & the reality that generative AI was built on stolen work from authors and artists (among other concerning factors), I’m opting out of generative AI (as much as is possible these days).
    • This is my promise to you: Everything I share has been written and created by me. Every post, every email, every word of my workshops. I share and create from my own experience and knowledge. And yes, this takes longer and requires more effort on my part. A worthwhile exchange.

If you’re new here, Hi! I’m Hannah, the gardener behind Rooted Cottage Gardening. I love connecting with beginning & intermediate gardeners, sharing everything I do in my garden, & helping you decrease overwhelm. I focus on gardening for the bees & other pollinators, building beautiful soil, and growing for beauty blooms in every season (yes even winter!). I designed my Cottage Garden to be a cut flower garden and I harvest & make bouquets each week for my community.

In this Newsletter, I share everything I do in my gardens after over a decade of growing loads of veggies, fruit, & perennial flowers. Subscribe below to be notified whenever I share new garden tips.

Cleaning up the garden- October edition
I have been so eager for October this garden season. The shorter days, the cooler, rainier weather. While the mums and asters flourish, everything else starts to wind down.  Part of me, appalled, asks, “What?! What do you mean you’re excited for the beauty of the summer garden to fade?! What do you mean you are ‘done with the sun’ and crave the weeks of drizzle?“ And with apologies to “Summer P...
Seed Saving
There is something incredible about saving seeds from my own garden & planting them for next year’s garden. This time of year is perfect for gathering seeds from your garden or adding seeds to a list to buy so you can seed save next year. ^some seeds I've saved from my garden this year. The two most important things (in my experience) are 1. waiting until the seeds have matured enough on the p...
The Autumn Garden & Cottage Garden Design Workshop
I try to spend the very start of my mornings in my garden, sometimes with a kiddo or two in tow.. Before I touch my phone, I make myself a cup of tea and head out to get morning sunlight in my eyes. Or, more apt today, misty rain in my hair. Today feels firmly planted in Autumn. As I walked around, I pulled a couple weeds & admired the asters and roses, and inevitably, as happens this time of y...
