May Flowers & A New Look

Hi gardening friend. It's a whole new newsletter over here. You might remember me as The Perennial Cottage Gardener. And while I still do lots of perennial cottage gardening, I have rebranded my business to Rooted Cottage Gardening. Hence the email change & name change if you've been following along on socials.

But goodness, here we are already in mid May. I spent the winter hibernating & spending time with my family. It was glorious. And now I've spent the first half of spring out in my garden & refocusing my business.

The tulips & daffodils are officially out, but there is so many mid spring flowers that are flourishing! What's blooming right now for me (aka what you can plant in your garden this year, so you have these blooms around this time next year, too):

  • Lilac (just about finished! These bloomed early for me this year)
  • Iris (bearded/German. Dutch Irises will be later)
  • Geum
  • Brunnera
  • Ranunculus
  • Anemone
  • Lupine
  • Columbine
  • Hellebore (yes, still!)
  • Peonies (just starting!)

As always, please check to see if a plant is invasive to your area before planting. (For example, Lupine is native to me & my area, but is considered invasive in other areas!)

Reminder: I don't use AI to write these- or any- of my posts. Everything I produce is from my own gardening experience and written (typed) by my own hand.

I believe strongly in business ethics and one of my main focuses is gardening while keeping care for our environment at the forefront of my decisions. I choose not to use AI to mitigate the environmental impacts of my business. (more info here if you'd like to read more about the negative environmental impacts of AI:

Cleaning up the garden- October edition
I have been so eager for October this garden season. The shorter days, the cooler, rainier weather. While the mums and asters flourish, everything else starts to wind down.  Part of me, appalled, asks, “What?! What do you mean you’re excited for the beauty of the summer garden to fade?! What do you mean you are ‘done with the sun’ and crave the weeks of drizzle?“ And with apologies to “Summer P...
Seed Saving
There is something incredible about saving seeds from my own garden & planting them for next year’s garden. This time of year is perfect for gathering seeds from your garden or adding seeds to a list to buy so you can seed save next year. ^some seeds I've saved from my garden this year. The two most important things (in my experience) are 1. waiting until the seeds have matured enough on the p...
The Autumn Garden & Cottage Garden Design Workshop
I try to spend the very start of my mornings in my garden, sometimes with a kiddo or two in tow.. Before I touch my phone, I make myself a cup of tea and head out to get morning sunlight in my eyes. Or, more apt today, misty rain in my hair. Today feels firmly planted in Autumn. As I walked around, I pulled a couple weeds & admired the asters and roses, and inevitably, as happens this time of y...
